Quirky Attractions To Tick Off Your Bangkok Bucket List

The city that never sleeps, Bangkok, remains as Asia’s cosmopolitan hub with its vibrant scene, street life chaos, majestic temples and diverse surroundings. Filled with surprises at every turn, there is never a dull moment in the capital. From floating markets to tuk tuks, there are plenty of things to do and places to see! So we’ve narrowed down the choices for you. Here are some quirky attractions to tick off your Bangkok bucket list:

Chatuchak Weekend Market

Let’s face it, flea markets are honestly the best part of a trip to a new place. With great bargains and local finds, there’s always something in store. If you want to shop ‘til you drop, hit up Chatuchak Market for a few hours because this market literally sells EVERYTHING you can ever imagine. With techno music blaring down the streets and the aroma of authentic Thai street food wafting through the air, this famous local spot covers 27 acres of space with more than 15,000 booths – making it the largest one in Asia. A true icon and a must-visit if you’re in Bangkok!

The Chatuchak Weekend Market opens on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Opening hours: Friday 6pm til midnight. Saturdays and Sundays: 9am to 6pm.

Bangkok Forensic Museum at Siriraj Hospital

For curious minds who crave a good off-the-beaten-track adventure, check out the Bangkok Forensic Museum at Siriraj Hospital. Fetus formaldehydes, animal body parts… are you creeped out yet? We’re not sociopaths – we promise! Feed your morbid curiosity with the unusual displays in this museum. A must-see here is the “Congdon Anatomical Museum”, located on the third floor. Set the mood as you walk up a dark, old, creaky stairway into a narrow passage to a room from the 19th century with endless rows of glass and wooden closets of human body parts. Luckily for you, they look worn down and don’t seem too realistic. You can always convince yourself it’s just a plastic display, though it’s not. But hey, little weird adventures make the best travel stories, right?

Calypso Ladyboy Cabaret

It’s exactly what you think it is, a cabaret show by ladyboys alongside dining! Ditch the idea of Patpong’s bikini bar and head over to Calypso at The Asiatique Riverfront instead. Calypso Cabaret has been one of Bangkok’s most popular cabaret shows since 1988, with 480 theatre seats and plenty of performers. Purchasing a ticket includes a free drink and the show runs for about an hour. Most of the acts are performed in classic-cabaret style with plenty of humour to keep you amused for days!

Wat Pho

Wat Pho, also known as “Temple of the Reclining Buddha”, is one of the largest and oldest temples in Bangkok. The main highlight of this temple lies in its famous Reclining Buddha statue. This statue is 46 metres long and stands 15 metres tall. Here’s an intriguing fact: the feet of the Reclining Buddha is 5 metres long and it’s been decorated with laksana (a Buddhist Sanskrit symbol and character) of the Buddha. Wat Pho’s rambling grounds also covers about 8 hectares and is home to some of the largest collection of Buddha images throughout Thailand! This place is simply breathtaking and you just have to see it in person. The vibes you’ll get from the sight of the colossal golden figure of the enlightened one definitely calls for a first-hand experience.

New Lumpinee Boxing Stadium

Witness the national sport of Thailand live and tick it off your bucket list! It’s a rule, you can’t leave Thailand without catching at least one live Muay Thai fight. And the best place to make this happen is none other than the New Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, which is run by the Royal Thai Army on behalf of the Thai Government (proceeds from fights are donated to various parts of the Thai army). To go back a little in time, this boxing stadium was found in 1956 and has hosted some of the most legendary fighters in Thailand and the world. Fights are on thrice a week so there’s no excuse for you to miss out on it! Newly renovated and holding up to approx. 8,000 spectators, the New Lumpiness Boxing Stadium is an exciting way to spend an evening in Bangkok.
